All of the UK's analogue TV broadcasts will soon be switched off and replaced with digital broadcasts. This is because digital TV uses less broadcast space which therefore allows more room for increased services such as increased TV channels, high definition broadcasts, clearer and more widespread radio transmission, increased wireless broadband and much more.
The switchover for the London area will start on the 4th of April 2012 and will be completed shortly after this date. In order for you to continue to receive broadcasts after this time you will need to purchase a digital television, a ‘set top box’ or similar equipment. It may also be necessary for your aerial to be upgraded in certain instances, particularly if you wish to take advantage of the extra channels that are already available to you.
If you live in a house, or a flat in a converted house, or small block of flats, the responsibility for changing your aerial will be yours. For those tenants in blocks of flats, there will usually be a communal TV reception system, most of which have already been upgraded and the remainder of which will soon be upgraded. If you are unsure about whether you have your own aerial or a shared one please check with your neighbours or your Neighbourhood Officer.
Remember that if you plan to change your aerial, and in particular you wish to affix a satellite dish to your home, you should always ask permission from the Association and check with the Local Authority whether it requires planning permission.
Please do not wait until the last moment to make the necessary changes, we will be happy to offer advice if you have any questions, however we are not specifically trained in TV reception so it may be necessary for you to seek advice from a reputable installer.
You can also obtain information and advice from the Digital UK website. This gives advice on how to connect your new equipment, how to retune your equipment and much more: www.digitaluk.co.uk
